Our children will be… Cosmopolitan
“Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.”- Flora Lewis.
Modern Foreign Languages is about much more than learning lists of words. It is an opportunity to look at the world beyond our own experience, to explore new cultures, ideas and traditions. In studying a new language our children learn to reflect on aspects of their own lives and make comparisons with the way other people live, broadening their own horizons. This, in turn, leads to children that are more tolerant and accepting of others.
Children who can communicate in more than one language can make friends with a wider range of people and are more confident when speaking in any language, including their own.
Learning a language can help to improve memory, problem-solving skills, concentration, ability to multitask, and listening skills. Moreover, when children learn a new language, they develop new brain networks and a skill set that are all in place for further language learning.
At Sacred Heart our children learn French with a French specialist. It is taught in a fun, relaxed way, with the emphasis on interactive games and activities that aim to build confidence when speaking French and an interest in the Francophone world. Our pupils can also join the Languages Club and also enjoy many other opportunities to explore other cultures and traditions. We aim for our children to be global citizens, who are curious about our wonderful world and all it has to offer.
