History
Our children will be…Critical Thinkers
“We are not makers of history. We are made by history.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
History is not just the study of dates, events and key people. The aim of history teaching and learning is for the children to develop historical skills and concepts, which are transferrable to any aspect of their life.
The children at Sacred Heart are encouraged to be critical thinkers and not to take all that they study at face value. They enquire and investigate the lives of those who lived before us and the chronological developments of the world we live in today. History motivates children to endeavour to see the lesson that they can learn from their mistakes, becoming resilient individuals.
Building knowledge and understanding of recent history provides the children with opportunity to show great appreciation of current events. This helps them to become disciplined and well-balanced members of society, understanding the importance of the past and how it shapes our present and our future.
